Melted butter or margarine for brushing dough

Lightly grease baking sheet(s); set aside. Preheat oven to 425°. If using loaf of dough, divide loaf into 12 equal slices. If using rolls, they are ready to use once thawed. With lightly floured hands, roll each piece of dough into a thin rope 7-10 inches in length. Make “X”s and “O”s from the dough sticks. To make “X”s, take 6 of the ropes and divide each in half to make 12, 4-5 inch ropes. Take 2 of the 4-5 inch ropes and overlap them to make an “X”. Place “X” on prepared baking sheet. Do this to the remaining rope halves. To make “O”s, take 1 of the remaining 6 whole ropes of dough and bring the two ends of this rope together and pinch to seal seam. Place dough circle on prepared baking sheet(s). Repeat with remaining 5 ropes of dough. Brush with melted butter or margarine. For chewy bread sticks, bake immediately at 425° for 10-12 minutes. For softer bread sticks, brush dough with melted butter or margarine, let bread sticks rise in warm area, until puffy (30-60 minutes). Bake in a preheated 425° oven for 10-12 minutes. Remove from oven and brush with additional melted butter or margarine. Remove from pan and serve.
